Chapter 21

Jonavin sat across from Jasky in the back seat of the transporter ship.

The hum of the engines vibrated beneath their feet, a low, rhythmic drone that filled the quiet cabin. Jonavin barely noticed the cold touch of the seatbelt across her hips or the sterile scent of recycled air. Access to a portal had been limited to club memberships—exclusive groups they had neither the time nor the interest to join. Now, with the windows offering only views of dark space, she folded herself into her meditation pose, seeking clarity.

Her fingers rested lightly on her knees as she closed her eyes, blocking out the low whirr of the ship’s systems and the faint chatter of other passengers. She focused on the sounds—the gentle hum of the ventilation system, the occasional murmur from the cockpit. Slowly, she began to peel back layers of awareness, diving deeper into her senses. The journey had given her a rare opportunity to practice—an opportunity to expand her perception, to sharpen her sensitivity to disturbances like Yuvin’s.

But as she settled deeper, trying to touch the pulse of the universe, something unexpected happened.

A thought cut through her mind like a blade.

Jonavin.

The voice was strong, direct, reverberating within her mind. She blinked, startled, her concentration slipping. Her breath caught in her throat. The meditation was lost, her mind racing. But she quickly gathered herself and refocused.

It’s Yuvin. Go to Unity.

The urgency in his words struck her like a sudden storm. Unity. The very place they were headed. But she had never experienced anything like this—a one-way message, filled with tension, like a thread of power coursing between them. She closed her eyes again, reaching for the connection.

Yuvin? Did you make it? She sent the question, though she feared it would disappear into the ether.

You need to go to Unity. The imbalance is there.

There was nothing more. No explanation. No comfort. The thought flickered and vanished as quickly as it had arrived, leaving Jonavin in the eerie silence of her own mind. The words—imbalance, Unity—pounded in her head, but there was no clarity. A thousand questions surged forward, but the connection to Yuvin had already fractured.

She couldn’t focus.

The low snap of Jasky’s gum broke through her thoughts. The sharp tang of cold air from the ship’s vents filled her nostrils, and the uncomfortable pinch of the seatbelt on her hip became more noticeable. She couldn’t keep her mind still. Frustration bubbled beneath her skin. She opened her eyes, glaring at Jasky, who was flipping through a magazine with a look of mild disinterest.

His gum snapped again, the sound obnoxiously sharp.

“I just spoke with Yuvin,” Jonavin said, her voice quieter than she intended.

Jasky blinked, clearly surprised. “You did it?!”

“Yeah. He said we have more work to do on Unity than we thought.” Her tone was flat, though the message unsettled her. The urgency in Yuvin's words, the feeling of something wrong at Unity—it all made her uneasy.

Jasky’s grin returned. “Nice! You’ve been working on that for years. Did he say if he made it to where he was going? Or if he’s heading to Unity too?”

Jonavin hesitated.
